Lynwood Road Residents Association

History of Lynwood

The first houses on our development were built by Fairview New Homes in 2000, on land that was previously a training centre for the Inland Revenue.

Going further back, the land on which the estate is built had been open fields and farm land up to 1939. The development of the railways and in particular, the opening of the tunnel for the Guildford line under the Portsmouth main line in 1908 resulted in the land being enclosed by the railway tracks and owned by Southern Railway. This restricted access for development of housing when much of Hinchley Wood was developed in the 1930s following the construction of the Kingston By-Pass and Hinchley Wood Station. As a result the area of land between the railway lines remained undeveloped until 1939. Just before the second world war Lynwood Road itself was built to give access from Claygate Lane, and with Woodfield Road running off of it, a few semi-detached houses were built. The planned development was interrupted by the war during which the land was largely used for food production, but also for siting anti-aircraft guns to protect the railway.

After the war, until 1947, the land was used for housing Italian prisoners of war who were engaged in clearing bomb damage in the Kingston area. In 1948 'temporary' government offices were built and the Inland Revenue used the buildings as the Surtax Office and then in the 1970's they became the training centre for tax inspectors. Aerial pictures of the Surtax Office show that the boundary of the site of office buildings is roughly the same as the present boundary of the Lynwood Estate on which we live. The surrounding land was still in use for allotments until the 1950s and the Lynwood Road Recreation Ground did not exist until after part of the land was dedicated for public use in 1958.

The closure of the Inland Revenue Offices in the 1990s opened the way for development by Fairview New Homes and eventually planning permission was granted for development of the estate we now live on, the first houses were completed for sale in the summer of 2000.
